Mistakes are my creative speciality

As a blogger and now also YouTube channel creator , I have come to realise that I have a special talent …in making dumb mistakes … stuff ups … bloopers.

I’d like to say my  stuff ups are done deliberately , as a ploy to make the children watching Kids Art School videos feel assured that even I ,  an illustrator /artist , make mistakes and hence therefore come to the realisation that it’s ok for  them to make mistakes too.

But no.

My mistakes come out quite swiftly and smoothly with no thought, planning  or effort at all…

Take for instance the several children I have named incorrectly in different sections of the show and on my Facebook page .

Or , the all too frequent mispronunciations of words , like for instance saying ” drun ” , instead of  “drawn”…

Oh

dear …

I have , however , decided to OWN these mistakes … and make them my speciality , so in fact , children watching can …

“…feel assured that even I , an illustrator /artist , make mistakes and hence come to the realisation that it’s ok for them to make mistakes too.”

love yous all !

Have a happy week owning your mistakes , just like me !

a poem .

Hhhemmmm ….

An Ode to Kids Art School

by Sandy Flett

Kids are drawing everwhere,

Within their homes ,

And on their chairs.

They’ve grabbed their pencils,

Pens and paper.

They’ve drawn their pics,

And I’m “ a- gaper”

With amazement,

And pure glee,

For what they’ve drun ,

I now  can see

is….

“Fantastical ”,

It’s “wonderful”.

It’s “splendiferul” ,

And “beautiful “.

It’s “colourful”,

”Creatiful”,

And  most of all”INCREDIFUL ! “

So keep on drawing,

All you kids,

I want to see,

What you have did!

And don’t forget ,

To “share”, “subscribe”

So we can spread

Kids Art School “vibe”

To more and more and more and more

Kids of the world

to draw GALORE !

I have CHD – Creativity Hyperactivity Disorder

9B509433-3374-4E2E-8D94-6A1CB8C138CB

Dear Reader,

I have a confession to make …

I am an addicted- to creating !

I feel I  have something I shall call “CHD “.

Creativity  Hyperactivity Disorder .

This , I realise, has been the case always , always, ALWAYS for me  …Since I could get my hands on anything that could possibly be turned into something else , I’ve been making stuff.

Aged 5 , having been inspired by the classic Australian Children’s preschool TV show , Playschool , which was filled with stories and songs and MAKING STUFF , I was continually sticking tissue boxes to aluminium milk bottle lids to pipe cleaners to any other piece of junk to make a something , like a car, or a dolls house or a boat or , anything that would logically (not) come from sticky tape, tissues boxes and milk bottle lids .And when my family moved out of the home I lived in until I was 8, my poor mother discovered  cardboard creations and other treasures for future craft creations ,  that I had squirrelled away in my bedroom cupboard  . ( She and dad had probably wondered at how little garbage actually made it to the garbage bin each week . It was all in my bedroom cupboard )

Years later , a plumber apparently found paint brushes that I’d stuffed down the laundry sink in a paint brush cleaning epic fail of mine . You can join the dots there .

Between the ages 9-11 , I was seriously addicted to papier-mâché . My poor mother patiently brewed litres and litres of  home made glue on the kitchen stove top, out of flour and water lovingly for me ,so I could paste thousands of tiny pieces of shredded newspaper to balloons ( to make heads OF COURSE). I made a pretty fabulous  “Captain Spork” head from the Muppet show . Pure genius .

In my teens I  painted , drew cartoons and created and choreographed  incredibley  fascinating  dances to my favourite pop songs that I had recorded from the “Top 40 Australia “  on my uber high tech double cassette tape player /radio and consequently performed to an audience of ..no one ( thankfully ) in my bedroom .

Late teens , I was creating my own clothes on my mother’s  old Singer sewing machine ( I was too impatient though to get the clothes finished and many of theses clothes fell to pieces very quickly ) . Again, my long suffering mother had to help me resurrect inummerable sewing disasters AND  comfort a cranky despairing budding seamstress who would be sobbing in a mess over the sewing machine .

And through all of these early years , a pencil, or a paintbrush were never too far away , as I dreamed of becoming an illustrator or cartoonist …

In my 20’s, the drawing and painting was pushed aside as I became heavily into song  writing . I even recorded a CD . A few loyal friends and family supported me and bought a few , which I believe now make brilliant drink coasters .

My 30s – well they don’t count as I was up to my neck in nappies , bottles , working part time . Just to find a moment to create a space for myself to slap on some makeup to cover up the sleep deprivation induced bags under my eyes was about all the creating I could manage .

But NOW , now , I’m in my 40s .And loving it ! My CHD has become wonderfully full blown. It’s  now  my beautiful husband  instead of my parents who is suffering patiently through my creative messes. BUT , the  fulfilment , happiness and basic  pure joy I get from making stuff is just , well , something I’m so thankful for !

I’m happy !!

I’m me !

I’m MAKIN’ STUFF

Drawings , paintings , portraits , writing cartoons , illustrating books , designing web pages…

And now ,

my You tube channel – Kids Art School

And I’m so excited  that my Kids Art School Youtube Channel has already reached across the globe as I would love other kids to draw  painting and just make huge  creative messes , just like me !

So welcome creative kids from….

…my home country , Australia , as well    Zimbabwe , and Poland , and Romania and Canada  and New Zealand and Turkey  and who know where else ?? I’d love it to reach the UK , and Singapore and South Africa and all across the world .

Having CHD is AWESOME !!

I hope you catch it too !

love to all

A second YouTube Kids Art School video – “How to draw a pug ” goes to air .

Woooohoooooo! Kids Art school is taking off ! The channel has  had 88 views in less than 5 days – which isn’t bad ! I’m so hoping this new venture will be a way of reaching kids …and grown ups … who want to learn to draw but can’t afford to pay for lessons .

I’m also praying that kids watching the channel will grow in confidence in who they are , in their own unique gifts and abilities in drawing , as children made by a creator God who loves them. I know my passion for art and creating comes from Him and would love others to have that comfort in their lives too – the assurance that they are loved and they are special …

love to all !

Sandy starts her Youtube “Kids Art School” ! Lesson 1 – “How to Draw a Sausage Dog”

I’ve just uploaded my first real kids art lesson on YouTube in my Kids Art School . It’s from a request from Maddie, aged 10 , and called   – “How to draw a sausage dog”. I’d love it if you could share this post  and let as many kids know as possible to help build up my subscriptions  on YouTube . My dream is  to help as many children as I can learn to draw ! Thanks guys !

Sandy

Having a personal creative space day and blue sausage dogs .

I needed a break today from some book and other  illustration commissions and just wanted to go with ” creative flow ”

IMG_1899

And so I drew a sausage dog .

A blue sausage dog .

Actually ,  a blue sausage dog with stripes and zig zags .

Actually , a  blue sausage dog with stripes and zig zags who wears a casual grin as she is comfortable in her own skin as she likes what she likes and doesn’t need to dress in the boring conservative manner of most sausage dogs .

ACTUALLY , a blue sausage dog with stripes and zig zags who therefore HATES  having to wear uniforms , DETESTS being organised by other sausage dogs , CANNOT STAND instruction manuals ,but, who loves SILLINESS  and  being CREATIVE and showing SELF EXPRESSION through art and music and clothing attire and who despite her love of being around OTHER  sausage dogs , feels feels most at ease when in her own arty space MAKING A HECK OF A BIG CREATIVE MESS .

ummm ….

This  drawing may have some deeper meaning .

IMG_1891

ITS SO FUN BEING A BLUE CREATIVE SAUSAGE DOG !

love to you all

Sandy

PS – A MESSAGE FOR A CERTAIN MISS MADDIE – I haven’t forgotten your request for a drawing instruction video of how to draw a sausage dog – watch this space over the next week or so ….

A Bookweek presentation, drawing and creativity in kids

Bookweek in Australia has just passed – It was always my favourite week at school as a kid because I got to dress up as my favourite book character and celebrate kids books at school and sometimes have authors visit the school .

( This is me circa 1981 dressed very convincely as a clown for bookweek – not sure what book character I’m meant to be , but whoever it’s meant to be ,I apologise , as it is slightly scary )

IMG_1771

However , for this years Bookweek, I stayed away from freaky clown costumes( fortunately some would say) , as I didn’t want to scare the children when I did my first ever bookweek presentation for the grade 3’s and 5’s at my daughters school – Good News Lutheran School .

IMG_1789

Can I just say

I HAD SO MUCH FUN

And learnt so much myself from these gorgeous short people .

So , today in my blog post , I thought I’d share my list of…

“Some things I learnt doing my first ever Bookweek presentation”

1. Kids are the best because they laugh at my jokes – very poor jokes , but attempts at humour nevertheless .

2. The kids in grade 3 and grade 5 at Good News Lutheran school have  especially  AMAAAZING  extremely good taste in humour , as they laughed at ALL  my jokes .

3. Some kids  these days still sometimes don’t think they are very good at drawing  (insert SAD face here)

4.  BUT, all kids still like drawing – especially silly stuff , like the Kung Rabbits we drew together and Donald Trump , turned into a unicorn , on a rainbow , singing old MacDonald Had a Farm

4. Kids get a little less gullible by grade 5 . I mean , the grade 5ers just didn’t believe me that my friend Anita and I were the actual original creators of this famous artwork , as they were (politely , as they are well mannered students at Good News Lutheran School) yelling out ” You did not paint that  !” I still do not understand why they didn’t believe this was true , whereas grade 3 kids were like ” Really ?? You painted that ? WOOOOOWWW!”

See below and you’ll get my drift

IMG_1780

5. And finally the BEST thing I learnt was that with the right encouragement, kids, just like grown ups ,  will believe in themselves that they can be creative through drawing – whatever form that takes . My 2 mottos i taught the kids that day were..

ANYONE CAN DRAW!

and

Practice,  practice  , PRACTICE !

This seemed to really resonate with the kids

And  , by far the BEST thing I experienced in Bookweek was this exchange I had with a little grade 3 boy who had joined the cue for take home colouring in pages , bookmarks and my AUTOGRAPH !!( yes , I was a celebrity in grade 3 for 15 minutes).

Grade 3 boy: Sandy , thank you for doing your talk

Me : I’m so glad you liked it ! What did you like the best ?

Grade 3 boy : Well, I didn’t think I was able to draw at all  …. but I DO NOW !

Me: ( speechless and melting to the floor with happiness )

Bookweek,

its da best .

Check out these awesome digital drawings by the grade 5s on display for Bookweek, drawn after another presentation I did for them on digital art. I just loved seeing the colours , their designs and most of all , their imaginations at work . Well done grade 5 !

Illustrations and my cheesy fudgy squishy brain.

IMG_1643

Its been a journey of building the confidence to take on the job – my first full book illustration commission  . My own scaredy cat brain had stopped me from drawing for almost 20 years ! Yes! It’s true ! I stopped drawing for 20 years ! But that’s another story that I’ll share in another blog one day . It’s a good one for anyone like me , in their mid 40s … heading towards 50… who thought  they were all dried up , on the decline and didn’t  have much to offer the creative world .

Its been a learning journey , as I’ve drawn the pictures,  to  keep persisting and pushing through , even when my drawing brain seemed to turn into a cheesy fudgy squishy   brain .

It’s been a journey of my own scaredy cat brain , as I felt anxiety and possibly even fear at times , when I’ve worried that the author , psychology professor Dr Allison Waters , wouldn’t like my work .

IMG_1641

But , I persisted ! I worked through the  scaredy cat cheesy fudgy squishy brain days and I’m SOooo close to being finished and ready to take on some more projects .. like a possible job with a big children’s book  publishing firm here in Australia illustrating a series of chapter books  …. ( woohoo!) . It’s not definite yet , but I need give my cheesy, fudgy squishy scaredy cat brain the flick ( “give it the flick” is “throw it away” in Aussie slang) and GIVE IT A GO !

Love to all !

Running to the finish line of a book illustration

I’m  on the countdown , nearing the finishing line and hurtling up the home straits – yep I’m finally getting closer to completing the illustrations for my FIRST EVER  book illustration commission – ‘Jessie and the Scaredy Cat Brain ” by the lovely  Dr Allison Waters .

“Jessie ” is a book about a girl with anxiety . It’s going to be used by Dr Waters in her research and therapy to help children with anxiety . Which is just beautiful .

IMG_1550

In fact , little anxious Jessie, her Scaredy Cat Brain and Happy Cat Brain  have become buddies of mine .

I have to say though , they’ve  gotten up my nose and , indeed caused me , their artist designer , to want to say very unkind inappropriate things to them when they have raised my levels of anxiety when the little darlings have refused to sit still long enough for me draw them in a different pose, or when they don’t seem to want stay around long enough for me to find a way of positioning them on the page  .. but they are pretty annoyingly cute and endearing at the same time . I love them . I do . Really .

But , even though this project is drawing to a close , some late nights of work in the art studio are still to be had .

Love to all

Swings

When I was a kid , I wanted to fly .

I mean , literally , FLY

Like  in the sky , kind of fly

Not in an aeroplane .

Not with wings , like a fairy .

But basically kind of take off , from the ground and , well , soar , up into the blue yonder .

I took to running down the ginormous grassy hills in my school playground , arms stretched out , optimistically waiting for my little legs to lift off .

News Flash :

It didn’t work .

So , the next best thing, was to go on the awesomely huge and cool grey steel 1970’s  swingset  in our backyard and try to tap into the invisible laws of aerodynamics and magic .

I’ll let you decide if that one worked.

And so , when the 52 Week Illustration Challenge topic was “Swing” …

Well, I had to draw this cartoon and stick it right in my illustration portfolio

Enjoy !

Cows

Upon the dawning of a  bright and crisp winter’s Saturday morning this morning , my family and I had a pleasant venture out to the countryside , escaping the “big smoke ” of Brisbane , to imbibe the beauty of the Australian bush and most importantly , to watch our youngest play soccer and subsequently stuff ourselves with pastries at the local country bakery .

And for some reason , I have come back from this journey , not only 3 kgs heavier , but with a burning need to draw a cow .

So here is my portrayal of :

” A cow ”

No doubt some of you , my uber intelligent blog readers , will see similarities in my little sketch , to the works of the great 17th Century Dutch pastoral painter , Paulus Potter , who sadly and remarkably , died of the milk borne disease , tuberculosis. Perhaps he should have taken to painting chickens .

Enjoy my masterpiece

Love to all from beautiful Brisbane Australia

For Olive – and why I draw for kids

IMG_0509So, my  blog post today is dedicated  to a precious girl , called Olive , aged 10 . I hope you get to see this Olive .

I’ll explain why ….

Olive, your dad visited our home to do a pest inspection this morning , which was really cool , because our house needed a pest inspection because the teeny tiny  little ants that keep trooping into in our bathroom are driving me INSANE  . I hate them , the little  sods.( apologies  to all any ant lovers out there)

And Olive, we also don’t really want our humble abode to be eaten by another type of ant – termites .And your lovely pest inspector dude dad sprayed our ever growing termites nest in the front yard so they won’t eat up our house ( more little sods ) which is nice.

But, as usual, I digress…

The reason this pest inspection was extra specially cool though Olive, was actually because I ended up having a nice chat with your pest inspector dude dad about martial arts, the tough lifestyle of a chef, ( his former occupation) , difficult rude customers , being a parent, and , you know ,other  boring stuff that grown ups talk about..

And THEN we talked about REALLY awesome stuff like ” life” and ” why there are so many annoying hypocritical Christians in the world ” and “unicorns ”

And , as well as enjoying the chat , your Dad made me reflect , that I am really super blessed to be doing all this illustration work for kids .

I am blessed , Olive, that I have some big publishers now wanting to put my messy scratchy artwork in their files for future children’s books.

That’s UBER exciting

BUT

Even though that’s great – the reason I am REALLY blessed is because I can draw crazy pictures which will be going in books , that will bring happiness to children , just like you Olive-  precious daughter of  the pest inspector dude , who gave up his chefs job which involved long shifts that kept him from his little girl (you) and that had left him too tired to interact with her (you) when he wasn’t working so he left that job, so he could be with you a whole lot more.

Because….

He loves you so much . That was obvious .

So Olive, I hope you get to read this post.

You are on my heart , because I have a 10 year old daughter too and her dad and I love her just as much as your dad does .

Which is why I drew Cupcake Marshmallow Sunshine the Unicorn for my girl  …and for kids just like you .

I draw for you guys

I hope you enjoy   your own limited edition autographed print of Cupcake the Unicorn that I sent home with your Dad today after he killed the sodding ants 🐜

Much love to you Olive

and

all my beautiful readers,

Sandy

SAY WHAAAT ??? An illustrator in a state of shock

So , I’m dumbfounded , flabbergasted, astounded and stoked ( ie pretty happy in Aussie slang) . I came third in the CYA, aspiring illustrators competition .

IMG_1318

I will back track to the beginning of the story –

About 3 months ago I decided  at the very last minute to enter an illustrators competition for the  Children  and Young Adults authors and illustrators conference, 2017 . I thought to myself ” This will be a good experience Sandy . A great way to get feed back on your artwork and illustration style Sandy and learn more about the craft – Sandy . ” So, I coddled together some little drawings , based on the text given . It was a trifle frustrating being only able to enter 3 drawings as I felt like I wanted to do so much more . But , I carried on , doodled away and sent off my drawings with few expectations .

And here I am , 3rd place winner in the “aspiring ( unpublished ) “illustrators section. The stuff of a little female in the western suburbs of Brisbane Queensland Australia’s dreams .

The competition involved illustrating the  first 2 chapters of a children’s early chapter book ” Sam Treasure :In the Whale’s Garden ” by Tina Marie Clarke . As usual my pictures ended up on the comic side . But hey , that’s my style .

So, without much further ado – presenting …….

“Sam Treasure – In the Whales Garden “by Tina Marie Clarke. Illustrations  by Sandy Flett

(The title page didn’t go in the comp but I had fun designing it … pretending I was a REAL illustrator kind of person )

IMG_1329

I was so wishing I didn’t have to draw a CATAMARAN !! FAR OUT- that was tough for me …

IMG_1330

IMG_1331

IMG_1332

This ones my fave – made me think like a kid again – which is not something I find difficult

IMG_1333

I had fun drawing the little creatures in the background observing Grandee  and Sam together at the controls

IMG_1334

The End !

In the next few days I’ll chat about my experiences with the publishing editors . It was pretty cool , can I just say .

Ciao

Sandy

In the Whale’s Garden

IMG_1294

So, this little picture was drawn for my portfolio and inspired by the CYA illustration competition that I’ve been shortlisted in . ( still picking myself up off the floor about that one !?!)

The boy, Sam , is swimming with a Whale , in the Great Barrier Reef – much like I will be doing tomorrow when I meet with some book editors about my artwork ie -slightly apprehensive , excited , but hopefully not wet …from fear …

As God is in the business of miracles , I am  saying  my prayers for thick skin to grow in my body tonight .

See ya !

Sandy

Creativity and Jesus

IMG_1286

I just read this verse from the bible , ten minutes ago .

It’s talking about a guy in the bible called Paul who has an AMAZING story of being a murderous angry Jesus hating man , and completing turning his life to becoming a Jesus adoring dude . And this verse is from  about a section of his life when he  was being begged to stay in a certain town to keep on sharing his knowledge of Jesus, (which he probably would have loved to have done) , but instead , set sail for another place , Ephesus , saying as he left “I will come back if it is God’s will “.

His life was run by Jesus …..

I’m an artist , and I love Jesus too . I gave  my heart to Him when I was 10 – and I swear , that since I was that arty creative little girl , to now , being an arty 45 year old woman , Jesus has run  my life .When I have  let him .

“When I have let Him”  …..I haven’t always allowed Jesus to direct the way I live .

I have been anxious , like the little girl scared of the moon at night , worrying about which way my life will go .

IMG_1079

My daughter Tara, used to be scared of the moon  … a water colour illustration I did a few weeks ago for the 52 Week Illustration Challenge .

It’s so easy in our comfortable middle income Australian life , to try to run things our way . To try to control our anxiety ourselves . To try to run our lives by ourselves .

As an illustrator/artist, I have become used to creating my works – a gift I know comes from God . God has given me an amazing opportunity  in the last few months , to illustrate a book to help children with anxiety , written by an Associate Professor in Child Psychology at Griffith a University , here in Brisbane , Dr Allison Waters     . It’s called “Jessie and the Scaredy Cat Brain ” . God has also led me to paint portraits for people , portraits of people who have passed away , of pets they love . I know in my heart these opportunities come from Him – because they do something that blesses people and moves them to feelings of love and peace .

IMG_1288

A page from “Jessie and the Scaredy Cat Brain ” . Jessie is with Happy Cat looking at a situation with her teacher that can make her worried . I’ve put this one in my portfolio .

FullSizeRender 2

Me and the lovely Zhulina with a portrait I painted of her father , an Afghani General who did in a plane crash when she was very young . Zhilina gave this portrait to her mother who now lives in Italy . Zhulina cried when she saw it .

However  ,  this gift of creativity gift that can also lead to a tendency to feel you can create and control your own way in life .

If I ran my life MY way , I would become an illustrator for children’s book that will be published and sold in shops and read by children across the land !

BUT , I also need to prioritise  God , first up , top of my list !

He is my good , kind , peaceful loving Heavenly Father . He wants the best for me . He wants me to share his love with other people .

With you in fact .

And so I have this morning – before I start a big start on my artwork for “Jessie ” today … which will likely be at least 8-10 hours of work , I’ve tried to put Jesus first .

IMG_1287

I’ve read Gods word , the Bible , and found the little verse I shared above , that has just jumped out at me from the page . And now , I feel compelled to share this blog post with you before I start work .

Finally , as the next big event in my life looms near ( only 3 days to go !) – the CYA conference , a conference for authors and illustrators of children and young adults and illustrators  . I have paid $100 a pop to meet with editors of BIG publishing companies -Penguin , Affirm , Black Dog Books and Hatchette , to get feedback and hopefully be contracted by one of them as an illustrator

But , God , I promise to you that I will trust that I will be lead by you .

“If it is Gods will ”

That’s my Theme .

Love to all

Toby the cat now has his rightful place on his throne … and also in my illustration portfolio .

IMG_1282

Toby does indeed run the house of my friend , Margie .

Unlike Margie , our resident family furry baby is Domino the Border Collie . Domino runs “around ” our house – constantly – usually chasing invisible monsters .. but he doesn’t  run the house …

Margie – I feel your pain …

And here is for the next picture going straight into my portfolio….IMG_1268 The follow up picture to this one  I shall post tomorrow .

And why is this feverish update occurring you say ??

BECAUSE  , I am going to my first ever ever EVER, Children and young adults (CYA) author and illustrators conference next Friday and Saturday  , here in sunny Brisbane Australia  and will be having interviews with 4 different children’s book publishers wherein my portfolio will be perused mercilessly and honestly by said editors .

EEEEEEEEEEK !!

Shall need to grow a thicker skin , just in case , by Friday .

Cheers from Brisvegas Queensland , Australia

The feverish updating of an illustration portfolio

IMG_1266

I’m so excited !!!! I’m like a kid at Christmas time who still believes in Santa!!

This artwork is going in my portfolio for the Children and Young Adults author and illustrators conference . I’ve been burning the midnight candle/iPad working industriously and feverishly to get my portfolio ready for this BIG event .

More info to come later…

But watch this space as I share my portfolio entries with you all .

Men , hair and the 52 Week Illustration Challenge.

I like to draw.

Correction- I LOOOOOOOOOVE to draw and paint and illustrate and create and , well, you get the picture .

I’m addicted .

Its a fact .

And because I love to draw, I started drawing for the Facebook  52 Week   Illustration Challenge  . And , the  theme for this week was to illustrate something about “texture.”

So what the heck , (I hear you say dear reader ) does all of this have to do with the Men …and Hair?

Let me explain .

I like blokes  (  dictionary definition – Aussie for “men”)  . And I do believe that many of the male  species or “blokes”  in the world get a ” bum rap ” these days . ( bum rap : dictionary definition- Aussie for unjust accusation, verdict, or punishment for bad behaviour)

And it is true , some men deserve to be  justly accused of said “bad behaviour “.

But.

Most  of you blokes don’t deserve this “bum rap ” . And that’s not nice . In fact , it sucks ( let’s not mince words here)

So in today’s blog post , I celebrate the blokes of the world .

Let me explain , again .

5 days ago , I sat bemused , perplexed and uncertain, contemplating ” How on earth am I going to draw for the 52 Week Illustration Challenge something on the theme of “texture ” ?? I turned my head and gazed around my household, whereupon my eyes rested on the noggins ( dictionary definition : Aussie for “heads” ) of the 3 gorgeous men in my life – my 17 year old son with full thick locks cut in the current trend of a brush held upside down , my 19 year old son with the makings of a small beard and clean shaven jaw , and  my gorgeous , long suffering hardworking 47 year old childhood sweetheart husband who is … well , let’s not go into details , but let’s just say , his hair has changed somewhat since we met in 1986… ( as has my waistline …)

And as I gazed at the 3 delightful blokes and pondered the theme of “texture”,  my brain went ” BINGO !'”

I’ll let my illustration explain the rest …

Much love to all my readers

God bless,

Sandy

Miss Condobolin, 1978

Dawn Phyllis  McGinnis was born and bred in Condobolin, the delightful western New South Wales country town , alongside the family flock of Merino cross Poll Dorset sheep , to Scottish migrant father – Percy ( who prefers for obvious reasons to be called ” Jock”) and 4th generation sheep and pig farming mother , Peggy ( who prefers not to be called by her birth name -Bertha)  McGinnis .

The  Miss Condobolin winner of 1978 , has  now evolved ,  like a butterfly from its chrysalis ,  into a rare and unique Australian treasure .

After several sittings , which necessitated copious servings of tea with scones , lamingtons and Arnotts Tina Wafer biscuits , I managed to capture her portraiture.

Dawn Phyllis McGinnis – this is your time to shine …

A boy and his dog

IMG_0808

I love dogs .

And I love kids .

Both make me laugh and fill my heart with sunshine. As we say here in Australia , ” That’s  noice.”  (Translation – “That’s nice  ” or “That’s so truly delightful ” )

And , in fact as well as being an illustrator/artist/cartoonist/ mum , I am an occupational therapist with little deaf kids . And to answer the  question you are thinking , and that most people ask me – yes, I can speak in sign language , but please don’t ask me to TRANSLATE a deaf persons signing as ” I went to The Maldives for my last holiday ” will look to me like  ” Can I eat the scrambled egg on your shoe?”

So anyway , back to the original point of this blog post…

When  I was commissioned to create an artwork to draw a little boy , Henry , with his Border Collie doggy , Alfie ( don’t you just love the names ???!) by Henry’s Aunty Lisa , as a gift for Henry’s 1st birthday , I immediately dropped everything else that I was doing (fortunately that was not a little deaf kid) and scrambled to my 12.9 inch 256GB iPad Pro and trusty Apple Pencil and start creating this drawing on the weirdly named , but extremely cool app , “Procreate ”

I’m pretty happy with the result.

As is little Henry’s Aunty Lisa .

And it was reported to me by Aunty Lisa , that when the parcelled up picture of Henry and Alfie had been flown the 1,797 km from Brisbane down to Melobourne ,  and was ripped open by little Henry’s parents , his mother cried tears of happiness when she saw the delight before her .

And that made made me happy too .

Which is “noice ”

So have  a noice day. Check out the entire  picture of a Henry and Alfie on my noice Illustration page on this website .

Love and hugs to all my precious readers,

And especially  extra love and hugs to readers who SUBSCRIBE  to this blog and SHARE  the blog with their friends and family .

Mother’s Day Musings

IMG_0209I love being a mum .

And today is Mothers Day here in Australia .. which is nice . Because I’m a mum .

AND know I’m “so blessed” ( to quote the millions of female Facebook users )to have even have kids

BUT…

When  the kids are being ruddy annoying and simultaneously , I am needing a caffeine refuel , let’s just say , it ain’t a pretty scene in the Flett household .

So , yet again I share with you through  ” Sandy’s World” cartoon strip, another issue of womanhood – combined “Caffiene Defiency /Offspring- induced Insanity ” . A deadly combination for me , and I’m guessing for many others like me .

And even if you aren’t a mum,   for whatever reason that may be , I’m  sure you ,like me , have had those times when small and large children have been getting up your nose , whilst at the same time you are hankering for your next caffeine injection .

For example , imagine you are at your local supermarket waiting in the self serve check out queue . It’s 8:15am on a Wednesday morning and you have only had ONE coffee . And that was at 5:45 am . And you need your next refuelling . And in front of you is a 4 year old with adoring parents  who say “of course you can do the scanning sweetie”.  So if that is the case for you , I’m thinking this cartoon will  have some resonance with you also .

So , enjoy.

And find the full cartoon in the aptly named ” Cartoon”  section , under ” Sandy’s World ” in this webpage ….

If you know a knitting or crochet addict

IMG_0902It has come to my attention that there is a real and hidden addiction epidemic affecting many women , and possibly men , in our modern 21st century society . You may well have a friend , family member , or partner , who is deeply affected by this addiction , which in turn has adverse affects on you – which is sad .

It is called ” Knitting and Crochet Addiction” , or  ‘KCA’

In fact , just yesterday , I met an individual with the said addiction . – let’s call her ” Inga” . ‘ “Inga”Ng of Centenary Suburbs Brisbane Australia, has taken the first step in dealing with her problem Or ” disease” (one doesnt want to be judgemental about such things) , as ‘Inga” has ADMITTED TO HER ADDICTION. ‘ Inga” still has a ways to go with her rehabilitation however , as she disguises her addiction as actually being a way of “caring for the needy” in the world by starting a group for other addicts who join together in their den every Friday afternoon at 1pm , knitting and crocheting blankets and other warm goods for homeless people , families in domestic violence situations and other such noble causes. They are even running a DROP IN AND KNIT DAY FOR THE NEEDY  on Saturday the 15th July , at Westside Church  of Christ . It is unfortunate that a Christian group is providing the venue for this , but it is what it is .

ANYWAY …..

I digress…

What I’m trying to say is. please ,  please , PLEASE dear blog readers. , share this blog post and  this cartoon with the world , so you can spread the word about this silent epidemic of KCA .

Here in Australia , it is particularly timely to share this post and cartoon  , with the occurrence of Mothers Day tomorrow , the 14th May . You may just save a family from destruction

Thankyou

My love is sent   through to you , via this , the amazing worldwide web.

Happy Easter !  I’ve been enjoying a  break away with my husband , Nige , and my daughter , Tara and in between stuffing myself with choc-cross buns ( I hate the traditional fruit ones -gasp!) I’ve taken some time to finish this illustration of a sad sad puppy . Gorgeous puppy staffy Lewis was the inspiration for this drawing done on the Procreate app .  To see the whole drawing , look under the ” illustration ” section . ( cheeky , huh??)

Cupcake Marshmallow Sunshine

IMG_0490Cupcake Marshmallow Sunshine is my little unicorn from Squirts , the cartoon strip . Poor Cupcake really hates his name and will be trying to make it very clear that in fact , Cupcake Marshmallow Sunshine is not his real name at all .All will be revealed , when Felicity Fluorogarde , 3 1/2 , eventually shut ups long enough in the cartoon for Cupcake to be able to talk .I’m loving Cupacke already . He’s my kind of guy- smart , slightly witty and sarcastic , with a splash of colour . I hope he sticks around a long time , because I think , even though he will be suffering through many situations with Felicity and her gang , he’s gonna be A LOT of fun !

Introducing Felicity Fluorogarde

IMG_0289

Felicity Fluorgogarde

Today , sadly , my poor little brain is very very sore after all my work launching this website yesterday . At least I know I do have a working brain . I’m giving it a bit of a day off today so it can kick back and chillax a little .

But, as my brain chillaxes , I want to give  a huge fabulous ginormous thank you to all of you 360 people who visited my site in the last 24 hours !Woooohhhh ! Amaaaazing stats !

Anyway , I’m going to introduce to you all my little friend Felicity Fluorogarde , aged 3 1/2 . Felicity is one of my stars of “Squirts ” . Felicity talks ALOT ,driving those around her more than a little crazy – even though she is kind of cute .She always always always wears a pink tutu with purple gumboots . It’s her signature look . One day  , you will meet big brother, Hudson Fluorgarde . Hudson is 8, and has his own special quirks – but more about him another day . Let’s just say , Felicity makes his life interesting ….

See ya later . My brain needs a little snooze ….

I have to say though , they’ve  at times gotten up my nose and , indeed caused me , their artist designer , to want to say very unkind inappropriate things to them when they have raised my levels of anxiety when the little darlings have refused to sit still long enough for me draw them in a different pose, or when they don’t seem to want stay around long enough for me to find a way of positioning them on the page  .. but they are pretty annoyingly cute and endearing at the same time . I love them . I do . Really .

But , even though this project is drawing to a close , some late nights of work in the art studio are still to be had .

Lets just hope I don’t have to foster out Jessie and her feline friends before I finish .

Orrrrr…..

Love to all

Sandy
